I’m Michaela, and I’m a dedicated member of the ICP Care community. My journey with Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP) began unexpectedly at 23 weeks pregnant when I started experiencing intense itching. Initially dismissing it as a normal pregnancy occurrence or a reaction to laundry detergent, I tried various remedies suggested by medical providers.

As a first-time mom, I endured many sleepless and itchy nights, assuming it was a common symptom. However, a turning point occurred a month later during an out-of-town concert with my husband. The unbearable itching and discomfort reached a breaking point on the two-hour drive home, prompting me to research her symptoms and leading me to the ICP Care website.

Taking matters into my own hands, I requested an additional blood draw during my 28-week OB appointment, leading to the discovery of Cholestasis. Despite the weekend respite from itching, the subsequent call from my doctor’s office confirmed the diagnosis. Fortunately, my diligence and timely intervention ensured a healthy delivery of my son, Wilbur, at 37 weeks and 4 days.

Postpartum, the itching persisted, prompting a referral to a hepatologist. Extensive tests, including labs, ultrasounds, and a liver biopsy, pointed towards an underlying liver autoimmune disease similar to ICP.

I am expecting my second child, due in June; one that came as a surprise to us. Despite hoping to address my health concerns before expanding my family, routine bile acid checks revealed elevated levels even before a positive pregnancy test. I continue to navigate my journey, bringing my firsthand experience, resilience, and commitment to supporting others in the ICP Care community.
