Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP) Receives Official ICD-10 Diagnosis Following Successful Petition by ICP Care and ACOG
[Miami, FL, October 1, 2023] – In a leading development for the medical community and patients alike, Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP) has officially received its own ICD-10 diagnosis, thanks to the determined efforts of ICP Care 501c3 and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Prior to this milestone achievement, ICP was ambiguously classified as a “Liver disorder in pregnancy,” possibly hindering care for these patients
The successful petition to update the ICD-10 coding system, initiated by ICP Care and supported by ACOG, will improve ICP diagnosis and care. Effective October 1, medical professionals will now be able to accurately document ICP cases in patients’ medical charts, marking a significant step forward in the recognition and management of this condition.
The new ICD-10 code will be code 026.64 with further designations for trimester of onset.
Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), a rare, yet serious liver disorder occurring during pregnancy, has long been a challenge to identify and treat due to its previously vague classification and rare nature. The official ICD-10 diagnosis provides a much-needed clarity for healthcare providers, enabling them to deliver more targeted care, monitor patient progress, and enhance overall health outcomes.
“We are thrilled to announce that Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy now has an official ICD-10 diagnosis code,” said Laura Bonebrake, MD, FACOG / Medical Advisory Board Physician at ICP Care. “This achievement would not have been possible without the support of ACOG and the dedication of the ICP Care community. We believe that this diagnosis code will not only improve lifelong care for ICP patients but also help further research and understanding of this complex disorder.”
ICP Care and ACOG remain committed to advancing the field of maternal-fetal medicine, advocating for patients, and raising awareness about Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy. This ICD-10 code approval shows the power of advocacy and collaboration in the medical field. ICP Care continues the life-saving work to improve the lives of patients and their families.
